On 9 June 2026, the SUM4Re project will organise a dedicated Training Session focused on urban mining and the use of smart sensing technologies to support more sustainable material recovery and reuse.
The session will take place from 15:00 to 16:30 CEST at the Leonardo Hotel in San Sebastián, with online access available for remote participants. Attendance is free of charge.
Supporting circularity in the construction sector
As the construction sector continues to face major challenges linked to resource use, waste generation and material recovery, innovative digital and sensing solutions are becoming increasingly important. Urban mining offers a way to identify, assess and reuse valuable materials already present in buildings and infrastructure, helping to reduce waste and support circular economy practices.
This training session will provide participants with practical insights into technologies that can improve the detection, inventory and reuse of construction and demolition waste materials.
Programme of the session
The training will bring together experts from Universidade de Vigo, TECNALIA Research & Innovation and OLAR Solutions, who will present different tools and approaches developed in the field of material characterisation and urban mining.
The agenda will include:
15:00 – 15:30 | Remote-guided material inventory using augmented reality technology
Presented by Clara García and Jesús Balado, Universidade de Vigo.
15:30 – 16:00 | Semi-industrial multisensor device applied to CDW materials
Presented by Jon Ander Iturrioz, TECNALIA Research & Innovation.
16:00 – 16:30 | Urban mining with portable XRF: from detection to reuse
Presented by Maciej Olszewski, OLAR Solutions.
Who should attend?
This session is open to anyone interested in circular economy, sustainable construction, recycling, urban mining, digital innovation and material reuse.
It will be particularly relevant for professionals, researchers, public authorities, industry representatives and stakeholders working on construction and demolition waste, resource efficiency and sustainable urban development.
