On 9 December 2025, the SUM4Re consortium joined its sister projects BIO4EEB and DISCOVER at the EBC premises in Brussels for a half-day event dedicated to advancing circularity in the construction sector. The agenda brought together researchers, industry representatives, and policy experts to explore innovation pathways supporting the transition toward more sustainable construction practices.
The meeting began with a welcome and introduction by the EBC, followed by an opening keynote from François Wakenhut, Head of Unit for Circular Economy & Secondary Raw Materials at the European Commission. His intervention highlighted the importance of innovation and accessible research in transforming waste into valuable resources.
The programme continued with Session 1, led by BIO4EEB, focusing on bio-based insulation materials, featuring contributions from AIMPLAS and INDRESMAT.
In Session 2, led by SUM4Re, representatives from the University of Vigo and Block Materials presented work on material data acquisition and urban mining, showcasing approaches that support smarter resource management in construction and demolition processes.
Session 3, led by DISCOVER, covered digital tools for reuse, with contributions from VITO, demonstrating opportunities for digitalisation to support circular construction workflows.
The event concluded with closing remarks from EBC, summarising insights shared throughout the morning and outlining the next steps for collaboration among the three EU-funded projects.
